There's sampling Russian culture and then there's trying to read Dostoevsky in Cyrillic. If the latter is one giant leap too far for you (and it certainly is for us!) then you might prefer to head down to Anglia bookshop, on the Fontanka embankment, just off Nevsky. Here you can brush shoulders with expats and tourists browsing through a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books in the Queen's beautiful language. Remember if you're planning on hitting the Trans-Siberian railway you will need more than a slim volume of Chekov's plays - only War and Peace will do!

this place was a life saver during my time in St. Petersburg. you can pick up all the great russian authors in translation - like Dostoevsky Tolstoy pushkin et al. but a wide range of otehr good stuff
