Summer Gardens To Be Restored

St. Petersburg's famous Summer Gardens have won approval for restoration works. The Gardens were founded by Peter the Great in 1704 at his summer residence, Peterhof Palace, and were inspired by some of Europe's greatest parks. Fountains, statues, flowerbeds, hedgerows and pathways all feature in the Summer Gardens, but today restoration is required if they are to maintain their glorious legacy.

Aside from general restoration, there are plans to revive the garden as an ecological system and to encourage back some of the rare birds that used to be seen here. On top of that there is hope of finding a sponsor to help fund the project of illuminating the Gardens and to restore all the buildings on the premises. Work is due for completion in 2013.
